TAJ MAHAL

Perfect in every way and recognized as one of the wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal or ‘Symbol of Eternal Love’ as it is affectingly known is one of the most visited monuments in the world for its grandeur and splendor. Built in Agra in the 17th century by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his late wife Mumtaz Mahal; who died at childbirth, the Taj Mahal is a representation of one of the most romantic tales ever told. Flawless and built of white marble, it is one of the best examples of Indo-Islamic architecture even showcasing Persian and Turkish architectural styles. Meaning ‘Crown Palace’, the Taj Mahal was built by an army of approx. 20,000 laborers and artists toiling incessantly day after day for a period of 21 years, after the land was purchased from Raja Jai Singh, who also assisted the Mughal Emperor with obtaining a special hard non-porous marble from the quarries of Makrana. In 1628, Shah Jahan became emperor and he bestowed her with title ‘Mumtaj Mahal’ meaning ‘Jewel of Palace’
